SMO1Plane Mufflers Could Relieve Some Airport Neighbors – Santa Monica Airport Commission responds to test results of a muffler that could be used by local flight schools.

If flight schools take to the idea, attaching mufflers to some of their planes planes could make life more peaceful for residents living nearSanta Monica Airport.

 The city tested a German-made muffler, called QuietFlight, on a Cessna 172 in December and recorded positive results, the Santa Monica Airport Commission learned Monday night (Calpilots Editor’s Note: Please read CalPilots Response to this article at the end of this page).

Watsonville Airport Runway 8/26 Closure

watsonvilleBe advised that Runway 8/26 will be closed effective 0800 on January 30, 2013 and will reopen at 0800 on February 1, 2013. A NOTAM will be issued communicating this closure.

As you may know from time to time we review the effect of changes in magnetic declination on runway number identification at KWVI. Last year we determined the existing magnetic bearing of Runway 8-26 must to be changed to 9-27. (FYI the magnetic bearing of Runway 2-20, last changed in late 1980s, and does not require change.) During this closure the Crosswind Runway numbers 8-26 will be removed and remarked desginating the Runway as 9-27.

ONTARIO: No quick fix for airport

OntarioAnything that can help revive Ontario International Airport, I’m for it. No surprise, right? So when Los Angeles Councilman Bill Rosendahl suggested linking ONT to downtown LA by Metrolink to increase the number of flights, I was interested.

Rosendahl told me he envisions jumbo jets carrying international passengers making ONT the gateway to Southern California. It would relieve congestion at LAX, pleasing his constituents who live near LAX.

Rosendahl said he has long favored spreading air traffic across Southern California rather than concentrating it at LAX.

Santa Maria_AirportThe Santa Maria Airport General Manager is planning to implement, what local pilots and Air Traffic Control [ATC] officials say, is a new runway taxiway re-designation plan which will be confusing to all pilots. This confusion can lead to unsafe and possibly deadly conditions at the airport.

Santa Maria Airport Air Traffic Control manager, James Jones states the changes “would be very confusing to air traffic controllers, local and transient pilots”. James goes on to say that” The confusion that will result from these proposed changes would only increase runway incursions at the Santa Maria Public Airport”.

Palm Springs_Airport_The Palm Springs International Airport is not yet LAX. But it seems to be on a sort of Los Angeles-style trajectory when looking at the increasing number of passengers making their way through the 16-gate airport.

burbankBob Hope Airport moves to avoid future runway power outages – The Burbank airport’s authority has voted to update aging runway wiring, foran estimated $3 million. Meanwhile, nearly $83,000 will be spent on an emergency lighting system.

Bob Hope Airport is taking steps to prevent another power outage like theone last November that knocked out operations on its longest runway.

The Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport A touthority last week voted to buy an emergency lighting system while officials complete a multimillion dollar plan to replace the dated wiring system that caused the outage.

 

“That outage, frankly, was not to the standard that we offer to the traveling public…. It creates havoc for those customers that couldn’t fly out of here at night,” said Dan Feger, the airport’s executive director.
