Airport ‘goes international’

Santa Maria’s local airport is about to go international. After months of work, the new U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility at Santa Maria Public Airport is finally set to open Dec. 1. This week, federal officials toured and inspected the roughly 2,000-square-foot facility, which used to be a general aviation terminal.

Air transportation planning in San Diego needs to become more regional, encompassing highways and transportation to Lindbergh Field, some speakers at a legislative hearing said yesterday. First inklings of possible changes to the mission and makeup of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority emerged as state Sen. Christine Kehoe wrapped up the last of two public reviews of the agency.

Truckee and North Tahoe residents met with representatives from the Truckee Tahoe Airport District last week to discuss public concerns and to strategize change. “We were looking for ideas and solutions for the airport to further reduce its impact on the community,” said Dave Gotschall, airport general manager.
