This happens more often than people realize. The airport commission is supposed to do the appropriate thing for the community and the airport. Some politicians, however, tend to favor development regardless of potential noise and safety issues – for reasons unknown.

This new distance, an increase of 924 feet over the previous landing distance, is important for the airport because it maximizes the available runway pavement for landing, enhances safety and brings the airport into compliance with FAA standards, all while minimizing any negative impacts to the community surrounding the airport.

Harrison Ford appeared before the Senate General Aviation Caucus Oct. 18 to discuss GA. From the AOPA.org story on the session, “Caucus co-chairs Sens. Mark Begich (D-Alaska) and Mike Johanns (R-Neb.) kicked off the session explaining that GA isn’t a luxury and, in some cases, is often a necessity. The lack of understanding of the role GA plays in the United States has placed it in jeopardy, they said.”

The club is the regional affiliate of the National Aeronautic Association. Anderson, who was born in Oakland, enlisted in the U.S. Army as an aviation cadet in 1942.
