Airport chucks safety committee
The Big Bear (CA) Grizzly
The Big Bear Airport board has decided to go without a safety committee. At a special meeting Feb. 1 Director Jay Obernolte said the airport wouldn’t need a standing committee to handle safety, and those responsibilities could be managed by airport General Manager Garry Dokter. The safety committee was scrutinized in November by board member George Berge for discussing a lease agreement with an airport tenant. Berge said the discussion went outside the committee boundaries. In other business, Dokter hasn’t finished several outstanding leases for airport tenants. Dokter said the leases for cell phone carriers Verizon, Nextel and Sprint, as well as for the Big Bear City Community Services District are not complete. He said he has been preoccupied fighting efforts to put a cell phone tower on the Riffenburgh Lumber property. The proposed cell tower could interfere with the airport flight path, Dokter said.
