Monarch Butterflies Return. Pismo State Beach, 2 Miles South of Pismo Beach

November through February

The butterfly trees of Pismo Beach are one of our most beloved attractions. Docents are on hand every day from 10AM-4PM and docent talks are given every day at 11 AM and 2 PM. Learn the Monarch’s life cycle and its incredible migration story. Free (805) 773-4382 The information in the above article relates to a grove of trees that is about 1.5 miles up the coast from the Oceano Airport. A couple of years back, I flew out there with one of the EAA’s candidates for its Air Academy. It is not a walk for those of us that are getting up there in years, but we walked it in less than an hour. You walk up the beach until you come to a golf course (not readily visible from the beach). The tree grove is on the coastal road about 200 yards in from the shore and on the far side of the golf course.

It is a neat thing to do if you’ve never done it. Put a lunch in your backpack and figure about 3 hours at Oceano.
