The Palo Alto Airport Association PAAA will host Airport Day 2009, Saturday, September 12th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Palo Alto Airport, located adjacent the Baylands Park at the end of Embarcadero Road. This open house offers the community a chance to see the inner workings of their airport and better understand and appreciate its value. The best part is that it’s all free!

Tours and exhibits focus on making this a fun, interesting and educational outing for the whole family. Food vendors will be serving a range of foods and drinks to satiate the hunger pangs of visitors (no alcohol allowed). Vendors will offer a range of exhibits and aircraft-oriented items for sale. There will be fun diversions for the kids as well.

Highlights of the day include:

Tours of our (PAO) working FAA Control Tower show first hand how Air Traffic Controllers keep our skies safe and orderly. Tours run all day long, but will be closely controlled because of security regulations and the fact that the airport is open for business and controllers are on the job. Adults must bring a photo ID to the sign-up area and accompany their children. No backpacks, purses, cell phones or other portable electronic devices nor food and drink are allowed in the PAO Tower. Transportation to the tower from the sign up location will be provided.

The EAA Young Eagles Program offers FREE flights for kids 8-17 years of age throughout the day. Bring your kids and their schoolmates and friends. Here is a chance for them to enjoy an inspirational experience they will not soon forget. To find the location, just look for the kids with the huge smiles on their faces!

Aircraft displays include the latest aircraft from many of the major General Aviation manufacturers which can land on Palo Alto’s half-mile long runway. Experimental aircraft will be well represented with simple light sport aircraft up though some real high performance aircraft. Classics, unusual and special designs will round out the show.

As in previous years, there will be a special display of the birds of prey that share the air with our flying machines. Docents will be on hand to help you appreciate these remarkable creatures and their flying skills so essential for their survival. Aircraft, fire fighting and police equipment from our local law enforcement, rescue and disaster readiness agencies will be on hand. As they display their unique aircraft and equipment, members of these organizations will be available to explain their service and mission and also describe ways that you can be part of the community disaster preparedness team. The Stanford Bloodmobile will be on hand, so please take a few minutes to donate.it is easy and you have the satisfaction of giving the gift of life! The Civil Air Patrol Cadets will present the Colors in a ceremony at mid-day, followed by welcoming words from representatives of our local government. Limited free parking will be available on the airport grounds. Bicyclists are encouraged with convenient bike parking. Follow the signs to the parking area.
