4 actions OK’d in newest Airport Business Park proposal
The Santa Maria (CA) Times

After hours of discussion Tuesday night the Santa Maria City Council passed four actions approving the newest proposal for the Airport Business Park. A fifth action authorizing the mayor to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the city and airport district was also approved. The first resolution certifying the final environmental impact report was approved on a 4-1 vote with Councilwoman Hilda Zacarias dissenting. A resolution amending the city’s General Plan to allow modified land uses on the 740-acre site passed 3-2 with Zacarias and Councilwoman Alice Patino dissenting. An ordinance repealing a previous specific plan and replacing it with the current plan passed on a 5-0 vote and an ordinance rezoning the 740 acres was approved 5-0. The last resolution agreeing to an MOU between the airport and the city passed on a 5-0 vote. The memorandum includes a guarantee of three-year leases for mobile home tenants, who have been on month-to-month agreements, and an agreement that some of the temporary improvement costs would be funded by the city.

This resolution was a key compromise needed to assure the council that residents of a 90-unit mobile home park, which must be removed before the plan can be completed, would be treated fairly.

Under the agreement, the city would be liable for a maximum of $75,000 to help fix health and safety problems at the park.

The council was being asked to make changes to land-use on the site allowing for 262 acres recreation open space, 105 acres of conservation open space, 16 acres of commercial professional office space, 19 acres of community facilities, 26 acres of airport services, 30 acres of airport commercial space and 70 acres for roads. The project would be located south of the airfield.
