SANTA ANA – Orange County supervisors today approved an agreement that gives Newport Beach the final say in most future runway expansion at John Wayne Airport. The pact, OKd in a 3-2 vote, lets Newport veto addition of a second commercial runway at the airport. Lengthening the runway southward would also require Newport’s blessing. n return, Newport agrees not to annex portions of the county-run airport without approval, and promises not to allow more housing near the airport.
Supervisors Bill Campbell, Jim Silva and Tom Wilson voted in favor, while Chris Norby and Lou Correa dissented. Norby said he supports the idea but thinks Newport should give more in return.
Newport’s City Council is expected to approve the pact tonight.
Newport residents have long bristled at the noise of departing jets, and they have hailed the agreement as an important victory.
But, with construction of a second runway likely to generate a massive outcry, require voluminous study and necessitate large-scale annexations of land, the agreement is also seen as somewhat symbolic.
