Castle airport plan heads to vote
. Tuesday’s vote could lead to further development
. Vote comes after nine years of debate, studies

MERCED – Nine years after its orginal development plan was aired, the future development of the former Castle Air Force Base near Atwater comes to a vote Tuesday. That’s when Merced County supervisors vote on the plan. Approval would give the Castle Airport Aviation and Development Center the authority to act on companies interested in developing portions of the former military base. The Air Force announced in 1994 that it would close Castle.
Since then, a portion of the former based has been used for private flight schools and the Castle Air Museum. Land near the base is being studied for a massive motorsports complex as well./p>
