Airport authority bill headed for Assembly committee
The San Diego (CA) North County Times
A rewritten airport authority bill is headed for a hearing in the Assembly Local Government Committee on Wednesday, according to the staff of Sen. Christine Kehoe, D-San Diego, the bill sponsor. The bill passed in the state Senate earlier. Through the legislation, Kehoe is attempting to reform the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. She has said she is aiming to restore public confidence in an agency that was shaken after last year’s overwhelming defeat of the authority-sponsored measure to move the region’s primary airport from Lindbergh Field to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station.
In the latest version, the bill strips the authority board’s three executive committee members of their full-time employee status and $171,000-a-year salaries. With the changes, all nine board members would essentially be volunteers, who receive $200 for each meeting they attend.
Addressing concerns of local officials, the board would have one representative from inland North County and one from coastal North County.
Rounding out the membership, there would be three members from San Diego, two from the county, one from East County and one from South Bay.
The legislation, if signed by the governor, would take effect Jan. 1, 2008.
