Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Alan Cruise and I am a Director at Large for the California Pilots Association. Our mission is the preservation of California Airports. One of our goals is to help ensure compatible land uses for areas that surround all California Airports. In 1985 the City of San Diego adopted the Airport Approach Overlay Zone ordinance (AAOZ). It limits the height of new buildings in the flight path of Lindbergh Field, so that they do not encroach within 50 feet of the FAA established flight path.
On January 25, you will be asked to consider approving a condominium project known as the Bankers Hill Town-homes. This project will exceed the height limitation established by the AAOZ by over 21 feet.
The San Diego Regional Airport Authority has come out in opposition to the Bankers Hill Town-homes, and found this project ?inconsistent? with the San Diego Airport?s own land use regulations. The City Council can only override the Airport Authority?s determination by a two-thirds vote. However, approving this project will violate ordinance ?MC Section 132.0205.”
Allowing encroachment into these safety zones affects the safety of everyone who uses the airport as well as the safety of those who reside and work nearby.
As a pilot for a major air carrier, who regularly flies large jet aircraft in and out of Lindbergh Field, I urge you to vote against this project.
