County approves Ontario airport joint powers plan
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Creation of the Ontario International Airport Authority has been unanimously approved by San Bernardino County supervisors.
Tuesday’s vote comes a week after the Ontario City Council approved the airport authority designed to return the Southern California airport to local control.
Los Angeles World Airports now operates the airport 40 miles east of Los Angeles.
The city of Ontario wants to dissolve a 1967 Joint Powers Agreement with Los Angeles.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise (bit.ly/NwVAxQ) says Los Angeles is reviewing the proposal and a report is expected next month.
If local control is granted, the authority will operate the struggling airport, which has lost about 42 percent of its passenger traffic since 2008.
The five-member authority will be made up of two Ontario councilmembers, a county supervisor and two business leaders.
