Notice Number: NOTC4478
ALERT BULLETIN: SUBJECT: RWY 31L – Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) Activation
FACILITY: Palm Springs International Airport (PSP)
TRIGGERING EVENT: Replacement of VASI Navigational Aid (NAVAID) equipment on left to PAPI on right.
NARRATIVE:
On December 15, 2012 the Palm Springs International Airport, Air Traffic Control (ATC) will activate the newly installed RWY 31L Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) system. This equipment replaces the Visual Approach Slope Indicator (VASI) system for RWY 31L, previously on “left” side of runway.
KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER:
It is important to note that the RWY 31L PAPI system has been installed on the “RIGHT” side of the runway, just beyond landing threshold and north of Taxiway Bravo. RWY 31L PAPI system specifications: PAPI-4R, GA 3.00, TCH 55′, PAPI unusable beyond 4nm from threshold.
Typically, these NAVAIDS are sited on the left side of runway, but due to airfield geometry and compliance factors, it was placed on the RIGHT side.
Another point to consider with this installation is the fact that parallel taxiway “Charlie”, in between RWY’s 31L / 31R, has in the past, been mistaken for RWY 31L.
Side note: RWY 31R also as an associated PAPI system but is on left side. (See depiction below)
