After almost two years of FAA inaction on the proposed AOPA-EAA third-class medical petition Congress has created legislation that would eliminate the time consuming and costly process for third-class medical certification.

FAA temporarily halts implementation of new requirements

December 10, 2013 – The Civil Aviation Medical Association (CAMA), the professional organization for Aviation Medical Examiners who provide medical certification exams to the nation’s pilots, has joined the consensus against the FAA’s new sleep apnea policy announced last month.

FAA Orders Apnea Testing For Overweight Pilots, Controllers – U.S. pilots and air traffic controllers who are deemed overweight will be screened for obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, a condition that could cause them fatigue on the job, endangering the lives of air passengers, a new FAA order says.
In a recent memo, the Federal Aviation Administration’s chief medical officer, Dr. Fred Tilton, has ordered physicians to calculate the body mass index of pilots and controllers. Anyone with a BMI of 40 or above will need to be evaluated by a sleep specialist.

LOS ANGELES—A federal report released on Friday advises against issuing regulations to limit low-flying helicopters to cut down on chopper noise over the Los Angeles Basin.

The report by the Federal Aviation Administration said the region’s complex and congested airspace, its dense neighborhoods and varying topography makes it “extremely difficult if not impossible” to come up with a single remedy.

Instead, the FAA recommends taking voluntary measures to reduce helicopter noise.
