Subject:       Job of a Lifetime for Pilot-Qualified Airport Operations Professionals

Come Fly With Us!  The State of California?s Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics is seeking individuals who are commercial/instrument rated pilots with airport management/operations experience.  The projected opening will be for an Associate Aviation Consultant, a full journey-level position.  Aviation Consultants conduct a wide range of advisory and inspection duties for Public-Use and Special-Use airports and heliports throughout the State.  Additionally, they perform evaluations of proposed school and state buildings/facilities sited near airports and make recommendations as to their acceptability from an overflight safety and noise impact perspective.

The State of California issues operating permits to all Public-Use and Special-Use airports and heliports in the State.  Generally, permit compliance inspections and inventory updates are done annually on over 250 airports and 150 hospital heliports.  Under contract, we also do periodic inventory updates and safety assessments of many of these airports for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), under the Aviation Safety Data Program.  The information provided in the Airport Master Record (FAA Form 5010-1) is then published in the FAA?s Airport Facility Directory.

Finally, we do helicopter landing authorizations for events where helicopters propose to land near or at schools.  All of this requires flying throughout the State in one of our two Beechcraft Bonanza aircraft.  It is a challenging, but satisfying job for those firmly committed to promoting aviation safety.  Each Aviation Consultant is responsible for covering a given geographical area, typically ranging from the Pacific coast to the Sierra Nevada mountains, offering a wide and diversified range of flying opportunities.  These aeronautical activities are conducted under the jurisdiction provided to the Department by the State?s Public Utilities Code.  All Aviation Consultants are based in Sacramento and spend approximately 20% of their time ?in the field?.

If you, or anybody who works with you, are interested in obtaining more information about an Aviation Consultant position with the California Division of Aeronautics, please call me for more information.  I can be reached at: (916) 654-5183,  (916) 653-9531 (fax), or via e-mail at g[email protected].  The Exam Announcement for this position is attached separately.
