AOPA California Regional Representative John Pfeifer testified Wednesday before the Senate Education Committee in support of Assembly Bill 1358, which would impose the same requirements on charter schools that currently apply to public schools by requiring charter schools to notify (in writing) Caltrans Aeronautics, if they are planning to acquire a new school site within two miles of an airport runway. “Thirty years ago the state legislature passed a measure to promote the safety of students and the development of compatible land use near airports in regard to school sites,” Pfeifer told the committee. “No one then could have foreseen the growth of charter schools that California has experienced in the last 10 years. This bill is important to the continued separation of students and airports.” The bill, which also has support from the California Pilots Association, Association of California Airports, and the California Teachers Association, passed through the committee 7-0.
