One of the great advantages of writing professionally is that we who scribble ideas down for others to read rarely have to face those others in person. We don’t have to worry about an errant idea sending you to the refrigerator to ferret out some overly ripe fruits or vegetables that you can hurl in our general direction as an indication of your displeasure with our prose. We don’t get too many exuberant pats on the back, either. But avoiding the first scenario makes missing out on the second seem like small potatoes.
Occasionally, I will break with tradition and appear in public. Most often these forays out into the world involve a grocery store, a coffee shop, my neighborhood seaplane base, or the local FBO.

ATWATER — Close to 300 people welcomed the Castle Air Museum’s newest airplane, a Douglas VC-9 that flew presidents, vice presidents and first ladies for 30 years, as it touched down at Castle Airport early Wednesday afternoon.
The air museum’s chief executive officer, Joe Pruzzo, spoke just after the gleaming blue, white and chrome-adorned plane circled the runway then landed in front of the crowd just after 1 p.m.

All ‘quiet’ on the airport front: New airport manager recruitment grounded
With the retirement of the embattled airport manager and the search continuing for a new airline to serve the Arcata-Eureka Airport, county Department of Public Works Director Tom Mattson said he will be taking over operations for the “foreseeable future.”
