NASA Ames open house will be first in 17 years; free tickets available
MOFFETT FIELD — The NASA Ames Research Center will host its first open house in 17 years next month, giving the public a rare opportunity to see its wind tunnels and “simulated Martian landscape.”
Center operations director Chuck Duff said the open house, which celebrates the center’s 75th anniversary, is an opportunity to share its diverse research projects and missions with the public.
“You can get a really unique aspect into NASA by coming to Ames,” he said. “It’s really quite an amazing place for the wide variety, from aeronautics to space technology.”
Comment Period for Airman Certification Standards Open until Aug. 25

In 2011, the FAA established an Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) composed of industry experts to provide recommendations on improving the FAA’s airman testing and training materials. As a result, the ARC chose to adopt an “Airman Certification Standards” (ACS) approach that would define not only the performance metrics for knowledge and skill, but also the required content for guidance materials such as the FAA-H-series handbooks and for relevant knowledge test questions.

New SAIB Addresses Alternate Method of Compliance to Cessna AD
The FAA issued a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) last week to inform the public about an alternative method of compliance (AMOC) to an airworthiness directive (AD) issued in 2001 that affects certain Cessna 172 and 172S airplanes. This AD (2001-06-17) requires a one-time inspection for proper engine idle speed and fuel control mixture setting and adjustment, as necessary. This AD also requires incorporating engine operating procedures into the pilot’s operating handbook/airplane flight manual.
FAA Stalling Continues on Third Class Medical Reform

Experimental Aircraft Association Chairman Jack Pelton called FAA delays on third class medical reform “deeply frustrating” and said at a press conference July 28 that the aviation industry may have to pursue a “legislative solution” if the stalling continues.
“We had been told for quite some time that there would be an (FAA) proposal no later than May,” Pelton said. “We have seen nothing. There’s great intent—but nothing has happened.”
