Watsonville Airport Runway 8/26 Closure

Be advised that Runway 8/26 will be closed effective 0800 on January 30, 2013 and will reopen at 0800 on February 1, 2013. A NOTAM will be issued communicating this closure.
As you may know from time to time we review the effect of changes in magnetic declination on runway number identification at KWVI. Last year we determined the existing magnetic bearing of Runway 8-26 must to be changed to 9-27. (FYI the magnetic bearing of Runway 2-20, last changed in late 1980s, and does not require change.) During this closure the Crosswind Runway numbers 8-26 will be removed and remarked desginating the Runway as 9-27.California GPS Signals Testing Jan 25 – Feb 1

Illinois Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study

(CalPilots Editor’s Note: When a state or municipality takes the time and makes an effort, the resutls are always favorable to the airports providing a huge benefit to the state or local economy) – The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) Division of Aeronautics sponsored the Statewide Aviation Economic Impact Study of airports in Illinois. The Illinois Aviation System is one of the largest and most diverse airport systems in the United States. By measuring the individual and collective economic activity stemming from these 116 airports and heliports, including the state’s commercial service facilities, the benefits that each airport provides the public, government officials, and other stakeholders were quantified and illustrated.

We are starting the new year with some nifty new features and improvements on FAASafety.gov. They will be available on Thursday, January 3, 2013.

One new feature is for non-registered users who attend safety seminars. If they do not have an account on FAASafety.gov, this new feature allows them to request that we create an account for them. We call it the “Auto Register” feature. After the account is created, the new user will receive an automated email with their log in information.FAA Safety Briefing

Councilman Garcetti Acts to Save Aviation Mechanics School

Garcetti said he will request at the Jan. 4 council meeting that Los Angeles World Airports, the operator of Van Nuys, and the Los Angeles Unified School District explore ways to ensure the continued operation of the vocational school, which has produced thousands of mechanics during its 40-year history. Because of tight budgets, the district might close or relocate the school.
