Runway Safety Area (RSA) Improvements Project

RSA Project Update:

In preparation for the installation of the Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) material, the construction work will begin to impact the Airport Operations Area. In order to maintain safety for both aircraft and the construction crews, there will be operational impacts occurring between January 19, 2015 and March 19, 2015. The runway will be open throughout the project for all commercial flights (barring unforeseen circumstances) and any work that requires a runway shut down will be done at night with a runway closure. We will continue to provide updates as more specific information is available or if the status changes. We appreciate your support and patience as we continue to improve your Airport.

Looming over Highway 68 south of Del Rey Oaks, the retaining wall is part of a $52 million runway safety upgrade, now in the thick of construction.

Last Friday, the Monterey Peninsula Airport District (MPAD) initiated their Runway Area Safety (RSA) project at the Monterey Regional Airport with a groundbreaking ceremony on the Airport’s Observation Deck. Representative Sam Farr (D-Carmel) joined the festivities voicing his strong support for this safety project. In addition to Congressman Farr, two representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Robin Hunt and Brian Armstrong along with John Pfeifer from Aircraft Owners and Pilots Administration (AOPA) joined the MPAD Board in the celebration.

The Monterey Peninsula Airport District voted Wednesday morning to pay environmentalists’ lawyers an additional $544,750 as the result of a two-year legal battle.

Monterey airport settlement clears way for runway project Monterey: Service road will no longer connect to highway – The Monterey Peninsula Airport District agreed to a settlement with its environmental rivals Wednesday night, fast-tracking the construction of a $46 million runway extension project after two years of legal battles.

The settlement with the Highway 68 Coalition eliminates the fought-over construction of a road that would have connected to Monterey-Salinas Highway.

Controversy over service road key to judge’s ruling – For the second time, a Monterey judge has halted the Monterey Regional Airport’s $46 million runway extension project, largely because of a controversial proposed service road.

Judge Lydia Villarreal said the district had again failed to consider alternatives to the new roadway, the purpose of which was not initially disclosed. She indicated the district planned the road to obtain 144,000 cubic yards of dirt, enough to fill 11,866 dump trucks, to build an area to contain a larger-than-required crash pad to the south of the runway.
